Kenya Ferry Services has blamed recent surge in large truck accidents at the ferry crossing on driver error. Some of these accidents have been caused by fatigue and overwork on the part of the drivers and brake failures and other mechanical problems, according to Kenya Ferry Services.
Kenya Ferry Services, operations manager, Mr. Antony Madzungu appealed to business owners who own the vehicles to ensure their trucks are in good condition, of the right weights, have balanced loads, and well maintained. They should also provide good working environment for their drivers.
Truck drivers need to be more vigilant as they approach the ferry ramps to avoid causing accidents. There has been an increase of accidents by large truck, one of them was recently witnessed on evening of Tuesday 1st April, at about 1845hrs, where a trailer with registration number T990 ASA loaded with maize consignment failed brakes just after paying the toll charges and plunged into the sea. Another recent incident took place on March 8th, a lorry with registration number T411 BSC missed the ramp and plunged into the ocean at the Likoni ferry crossing as it descended the cliff on its way to board one of the ferries to island side.
“We thank God that no casualties were reported in both cases but we want to remind truck drivers that their actions are putting lives of many ferry users at risk and they will be held responsible for any negligence on their part,” said Mr. Madzungu.
