Youth Entrepreneurs have a reason to smile as The Public Procurement Directorate in partnership with Private Sector and Development Partners is in the process of implementing the Presidential decree on youth access to 10% government procurement.
Towards this, a taskforce has been set up to spearhead the implementation process. The areas that are to be set aside for preferences and reservations for the youth are as follows:
Some of the Preferences of Reservation for Youth Entrepreneurs;
- Car leasing
- Cab/Taxi services
- Events organizing
- Courier services
- IT services e.g. websites, etc
- Promotional materials i.e.
- Branding e.g. T-shirts, Caps, Banners, Posters, etc.
- Photography and Videography services
- Insurance Agency
Exclusive Reservations for Youth Entrepreneurs to benefit from are;
- Flowers
- Cleaning services
- Garbage collection
- Newspapers and magazine
- Supply of Airtimes
- Supply of Milk
Other areas include Professional services/consultancy. If you are an Engineer, Lawyers, Doctor, strategist (development of strategic plans), etc the opportunities are immense.
The government is in the process of registering and pre-qualifying youth owned enterprises so that they can access government tenders and contracts. Government tenders amount to billions each year, Its a great opening for the youth! This is an affirmative action that will ensure we get access to over 30 billion worth of government contracts.

It is indeed great news, the only issue now is to make sure that the Government can be accountable to actually give youth entrepreneurs tenders and not just to excite them with the news. They also need to have a way to measure at the end of financial year, how many youth entrepreneurs benefited from this affirmative action that is being undertaken.
