What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you are asked what “ARM Cement Ltd.” does? Well some of us, we know it for Rhino Cement or Rhino Cement Foundation, others would probably go for cement production, right! But did you know that it also produces Fertilizer.
So what do you need to know about Mavuno fertilizer? Well, it has been tried, tested and its performance proven going by various field trials and demonstrations. An example is a joint demonstration by ARM and Ministry of agriculture which was conducted in Trans Nzoia East in 2006 where 100 primary schools with a combined acreage of 100 acres were involved.
The yields from the various schools were recorded, with the highest yield being 42 (90kg) bags where mavuno fertilizer was used. The average yield from the 100 schools was 20 bags per acre compared to the adjacent farms where DAP/CAN fertilizers had been used. In these schools, the highest yield recorded was 20 bags per acre with an average of 14 bags per acre.

Maize Production in Kenya has been declining over the years and soil acidity has been identified as one of the major causes of declining yields. Maize production requires an optimal soil pH of between 5.5-6.5 and currently, soil testing results so far done in many agricultural regions in the country e.g Trans Nzoia County indicate to be having a pH ranging between 4.6-4.8 which is unsuitable for maize production.
Furthermore, farmers have been using DAP which is an acidifying fertilizer year after year thus leading to a buildup of acidity in the soil and consequently, nutrients get locked up in the soil resulting to declining soil fertility. By increasing the pH of the soil to an optimum level of 5.5-6.5, you can neutralize the acidity caused by nitrogenous compounds, eliminate the toxic effects of Aluminium and increase the crops uptake of essential nutrients.

It is with this scenario in mind that the Government should deem it necessary to seriously address the issue of soil acidity by promoting use of non-acidifying fertilizers such as Mavuno fertilizers which is the most superior in terms of nutrient levels and cost effectiveness compared to the other basic fertilizers.
