How To Register KRA VAT For Limited Liability Company In Kenya

KRA VAT is an essential tax obligation which has to be met by every businesses operating in Kenya. Most entrepreneurs tend to ignore it until the taxman catches up with them.

Did you know that for every month that your limited company goes without making monthly VAT returns, you could face a penalty of Ksh. 10,000 for each month you failed to make return. That’s a lot of money if you ask, especially when it accumulates for many months or even years!

So now you know the importance of KRA VAT for your Limited Company, In order to register KRA VAT for Limited Liability Company, you will need the following;

  • Original Company Incorporation Certificate (A4 size, blue in colour)
  • Original Article of Association
  • KRA PIN of one of the company Directors
  • Postal Address
  • Phone number
  • Email Address

Please note that in order to apply for your KRA VAT for Limited Company, you’ll need to take the original business documents for your Limited Company to KRA offices for Data Loading.

You will be required to proof that the business was registered in the Company Registry by presenting the following original documents for your limited company to KRA offices during the Data Loading process;

  1. Certificate of Incorporation
  2. Article of Association/Memorandum
  3. KRA PIN of Director(s)

In order to save time, please make sure you have made some photocopies of the following documents so that you will leave the copies with KRA to complete the Data Loading process;

  • Copy of the Certificate of Incorporation
  • Copy of KRA PIN of one of the directors

Now that you have completed your Data Loading, you can now register your KRA VAT for Limited Liability Company online without any problem.

    i have a limited company , i am not vat registered , it a villa rental business , i am in a loss.
    we file our tax return yearly , are we doing wright ? we do not have an ETR machine, do we need one ?

    Some one told me that if you have a Pin Certificate you dont need to register for VAT.
    Is this true.

    • Yes, that is true. What you need to do is enable the VAT obligation on your KRA PIN Certificate and that will allow you to use your KRA PIN number for VAT purposes. Hope that helps.

    • Had you register a company PIN for your company 5 years ago? If yes, you need to check if there was any tax obligation on your company PIN. Limited companies require to make nil returns even if its not trading.

        the PIN was registered on march.
        the tax obligation is icome tax .
        do i need to also make nill returns and is there fine the company is subject to?
